India on Friday detected 96,424 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, pushing the country's tally to 5.2 million, data from the Union health ministry showed.
On Friday, the health ministry said 1,174 people died of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking total mortalities from the disease to 84,372.According to the health ministry, India's coronavirus caseload now stands at 52,14,678.
There are over 10.17 active cases of the novel coronavirus, while 41,12,552 have cured/discharged/migrated, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.India has been posting the highest single-day caseload in the world since early August and seems on course to cross the United States as the country with the most number of cases.Deaths in India have been relatively low, and it has a fatality rate of 1.62 per cent.Meanwhile, Telangana recorded 2,043 fresh coronavirus cases and 11 fatalities, taking the tally of infections in the state to 1.67 lakh.Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 314, followed by Rangareddy 174 and Medchal Malkajgiri 144, a government bulletin said on Friday, providing data as of 8 PM on September 17.The cumulative recovered cases stood at 1.35 lakh while 30,673 are under treatment.Even as the coronavirus cases continue to rise in the country, schools in Meghalaya which are shut for six months due to the Covid-19 pandemic will partially reopen from next week for students to meet teachers to clarify their doubts, Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said on Friday.The schools will be open for students of class 9 to 12 to meet teachers to clear their doubts but there will be no regular classes and no classroom session, he said.
