PATNA: Bootleggers killed a constable in dry Bihar's Muzaffarpur during an excise raid past midnight on Monday to bust a liquor den on the bank of the Burhi Gandak river.
Deepak Kumar (23) was dragged into a dinghy while in pursuit of two of the suspects, who then threw him into the river and watched him drown, police said.In Patna, four members of a police team were injured in an assault by a group of 25 to 30 people allegedly having liquor at a party in the Lodipur PWD quarters.
Excise superintendent Sanjay Kumar Rai said the Muzaffarpur raid was planned after the department received leads about bootleggers brewing hooch in Sakra-Musahri area.
"Two teams fanned out into the area, catching seven suspects in the act.
When they tried to flee, Deepak was among those who gave chase.
The duo he was after boarded a small boat, dragged him along and threw him into the water," he said.Deepak had been attached to the excise department for around two years.
